DEFINITION GUESS

Definition Guess is a vocabulary quiz that flips the usual word game on its head: instead of starting from letters, you start from a dictionary definition and a scrambled set of letters. Your job is to read the clue, study the example sentence, and rearrange the letters into the word that fits. It is part anagram puzzle, part reading-comprehension exercise — and a surprisingly effective way to learn new words.

Each game runs for five rounds across a category of your choice, from everyday common words to specialised sets like nature, science, food, sports and animals. Because the target word is generated and verified on the server, every answer is checked for correctness before your score is recorded, keeping the leaderboard honest.

Each correct answer is worth points multiplied by the length of the word, so longer words are far more valuable. You start each round with a potential of 10 points, but using a hint deducts 3 points from that round's value — so a word solved with two hints is worth less than one solved unaided. The minimum payout for a correct guess is 2 points per letter, so even a hinted answer still rewards you for getting it right.

You can also skip a round entirely if a word is beyond you. Skipped words score zero but the correct answer is revealed, turning every miss into a small learning moment rather than a dead end.

• →Read the example sentence first. Context often reveals whether the word is a noun, verb or adjective, which narrows the field dramatically.
• →Count the letters. The scrambled tiles tell you the exact length — match that against any word the definition brings to mind before committing.
• →Look for familiar affixes. If you see -TION, -MENT, -ABLE or -LY, the root is probably a word you already know.
• →Use hints sparingly. A single hint costs 3 points, so only spend one when you have a strong suspicion and need a nudge.
• →Do not be afraid to skip. Skipping a word you genuinely do not know lets you see the answer — that is how vocabulary grows.

Definition Guess is built around exactly that pattern: each round gives you the meaning, a usage example, and the letters, so you are actively reconstructing the word rather than passively recognising it.
